Gaining Experience Outside the Confines of the College of Law

In addition to the many opportunities Nebraska Law students have to gain practical experience at school, there are many possibilities locally and nationally. Since the College of Law is located in the State’s capital as well as the county seat for Lancaster County, our students have the ability to obtain intern and externships with the Nebraska Legislature as well as with offices of the Federal, State and Local governments. Lincoln and Omaha are also home to a number of non-profit organizations that open their doors to our students each year including Nebraska Appleseed, Legal Aid of Nebraska as well as ACLU of Nebraska. Our students also find unique intern and externship opportunities beyond Nebraska. In Summer 2011, a 1L student was a judicial extern for the Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico, and this summer a 2L student is spending her summer interning in New York City with the Center for Constitutional Rights. Many intern and externships are performed with non-profit organizations in the areas of public interest law.
