A fourth year of the “National Bike Challenge” is in the “Warm Up” phase and will officially start May 1. The friendly competition is being hosted this year by People for Bikes and the Scott paper company.

This is a great way to tally how many miles you ride and also contribute bicycle enthusiasm data to both city and nation. These data can help make the case for improving cycling infrastructure or safety awareness when official planners are thinking about local or state improvements in transportation.

The challenge this year officially starts May 1 and continues through September, but joining now during the Warm-Up period will let you get used to the site and how to log miles. It is easy to join by going to the National Bike Challenge web site (see below) and clicking “JOIN”.
- In addition to name, email address and assorted other information, you will be asked to select a Workplace. Make sure the Workplace is “University of Nebraska-Lincoln” (there is a search function so you can find the right workplace). This way, anyone who is riding for a UNL team will be counted as riding for the university.
- After your profile is created, you can go into it and also select a team. I’m inviting you to join UNL East Campus.

Some people on a team ride a lot, some ride occasionally…but it all counts. Every day that you get on a bicycle and ride at least one mile, you will accumulate 20 points plus a point for each mile. If you don’t have an odometer for your bike, you can estimate your distance by going to Google Maps and using Get Directions to input your starting and ending points, making sure to click on the Bicycle icon. It will give you a pretty close distance.
