Message from Professor Perlman

Dear 1 & 2 L Nebraska Law Students:

I am developing a study abroad program to China this May. The course would be Comparative Chinese Law and Culture, available for either 2 or 3 credit hours. We would depart on May 7- 8 and return on May 20. We would spend three days in Beijing visiting the Great Wall, Forbidden City, and other cultural sites and would have one lecture from a Beijing law professor on Chinese culture. We would spend approximately 8 days in Xi’an, China. We would see cultural sites on the weekend. During the week there would be each day a 4 hour lecture from Chinese law professors from Xi’an Jiaotong University Law School (in English) on an area of Chinese law followed by an hour session with me contrasting American Law. We would also visit the People’s Court and some provincial and municipal offices. I am hopeful several Chinese law students would participate with us. Students would be expected to produce a paper after we return, the nature and length of which would depend on the credit hours requested.

Cost: Xi’an Jiaotong has applied for a grant from the Chinese government to fund all of our expenses while in China other than personal expenses such as entertainment, etc. If this grant is successful, the cost you would incur would be your airplane ticket to China ($1500-$2000) and possibly train ($200) or airfare ($500) from Beijing to Xi’an. (These are current posted prices; may change). In addition there would be the cost of a visa and some fees from the University for medical insurance, etc. A detailed budget will be provided before you would need to commit. You would of course have to pay tuition and fees for the course, as well as any personal frolics and detours. I will not know whether the grant is successful for a few weeks. But I would like some indication of student interest as soon as possible. You will probably need to make a firm commitment by February 1 or shortly thereafter.

Understanding it is not a commitment, could you please let me know of your interest, and how serious that interest is. My email is: hperlman1@unl.edu. I will hold an information session as soon as I find out about the grant but I’m happy to talk with any of you who are interested ahead of time. My office is 263.
