The Second Annual Prairie Pride Film Festival is looking for volunteers and students interested in taking on leadership positions!
Volunteer positions not only give students valuable programming knowledge regarding community events and film, but are also invaluable experiences for a resume. The first annual Prairie Pride Film Festival was held at the Joyo Theatre from February 23rd to February 26th, 2011. The festival was sponsored by Allies and Advocates for GLBT Equality at the College of Law and the LGBTQA Resource Center on City Campus. The focus of this event is spread awareness of LGBTQA issues through film and celebrate the vessel film provides in exploring societal issues. The festival was nominated for a Chancellor’s Award and was well-recognized throughout Nebraska Law and the community at large.
Mike Echternacht and Elsbeth Magilton co-produced the festival last year and are ready to pass on experience by partnering with students interested in working on the festival.
The second annual Prairie Pride Film Festival is scheduled for March 28th – March 31st 2012 and has moved to The Ross Theater to better accommodate students. There are four main areas in which volunteers are needed. We are looking for people interested in taking a leadership position in each area. It's probably best that 1Ls do not take leadership roles, because of how close to finals the festival is. However, we would love to see 1Ls in many supporting roles! Responsibilities can (and should be) delegated to multiple volunteers and the time commitment to each area is moderate! If you already filled out the A&A survey and expressed interest in volunteering we will e-mailing you in the coming months. If this e-mail provided you with a clear direction for your area of interest please let us know.
1. Development and Marketing: This division will be responsible for fund-raising and publicity for the festival. This includes calling radio and television stations, newspapers, and community centers. This division will be responsible for advertising the festival by putting up posters, flyering, and hosting booths in the student union. Fund-raising includes private solicitation and applying for grants (many of which are already in progress).
2. Programming: This is the smallest division and will work directly with Mike Echternacht to select and book films for the festival. This includes finding films, securing rights to show the films, and setting up screenings. No experience is necessary! We are hoping to pass on our connections! The majority of this work will take place this fall.
3. Production: The division is responsible for booking locations and speakers. Generally, the festival aims to host a finale party, as well as events throughout the festival. These events include speakers on point with films, after-parties, and discussions. This group will also book community members to introduce every film. Even if you are not a member, Allies and Advocates at the UNL Law College will be of aid to this division in locating speakers and have offered their support.
4. Sales and Merchandise: This division will be in charge of handling ticket, t-shirt and poster sales. They will partner with Development and Marketing (and could possibly be lead by the same person). Design for this year’s merchandise is under way (our new logo is attached!). This division will not require as much work until the Spring semester.
