The winter season is on its way. There is nothing I like better than curling up with a good book when the weather gets cold. Might I suggest the newest edition of the APWA Roadway Maintenance Guide? For the folks in our business, it’s all in there! From administration and management topics to operating policies and procedures and asset management, the guide covers lots of areas for your behind-the-desk people. Then they get into the heart of the book, namely maintenance of all the different kinds of roadways. Maintenance and preservation of concrete, asphalt and aggregate surfaced roadways are all discussed in detail. The last chapters then discuss proper maintenance of other roadway features. I think the guide is a great refresher for experienced folks, as well as a good starting point for some of your newer employees. The gravel road section is especially informative. Everything you want to know about quality aggregate, wash-boarding, and fixing potholes. The book does have a great ending as well, with well-maintained happy roads of all kinds. It’s a Christmas miracle! Please check out the APWA Roadway Maintenance Guide, available on the APWA website. Happy holidays from LTAP!
