I expect that most of you have heard of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). You may have also heard it referred to as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). Both titles refer to our current federal highway funding bill, which is a long-term federal spending bill effecting funding for roads and bridges, among many other things. Some federal programs that we are used to from past years are still present in some form, but over a dozen entirely new programs were also created by the Act. This law is going to be with us until 2026 and beyond, so I think it is to our benefit to thoroughly understand these new programs as they are here to stay, and it is our job to leverage all available funds to pay for construction and maintenance of our public assets. I know lots of folks are working hard to help us understand what it all means and how local public agencies can access this new money. My message is to try to stay informed as new details are released from FHWA, NDOT, NACO, etc. concerning IIJA programs and think about how the new program may benefit your agency. LTAP will continue to pass along any helpful events and information regarding IIJA programs that we come across.
