Workforce Development Toolkit

EDC 7 included workforce development as a key initiative for moving our transportation system forward. Explore the Workforce Development Toolkit for strategies to raise the bar in your department.

The Local and Tribal Brochure details important information on workforce development resources for rural regions. The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) support these regions through various programs, including their Every Day Counts (EDC) initiatives, which provide improved infrastructure and career opportunities for residents in local and tribal communities. Members of these communities can participate in the transportation industry and help provide direct benefits to their local region, such as expanding markets and improved quality of life.

The Rural Opportunities to Use Transportation for Economic Success (ROUTES) Initiative helps empower local and tribal communities through supporting transportation policies and equitable access to transportation safety, mobility, and economic development. This program supports local and tribal communities by developing tools and resources and connecting these communities with funding opportunities.

Additional resources are available for equity in infrastructure. Earlier this month, the Department of Labor’s Women’s Bureau released a new toolkit for Building an Equitable Infrastructure Workforce. This module provides guidance on strategies and best practices for recruiting and retaining women in construction, manufacturing, and clean energy jobs and can be used by a wide range of stakeholders. The strategies should be viewed as a menu of options and entry points to initiate new projects and programs or fill the gaps in existing work, depending on the community and workforce needs. Access the toolkit to learn more.
