Come learn about non-academic careers in math!
Are you a math major or prospective math major wondering about career options? The UNL chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics invites you to a panel on Monday, November 2nd from 4 - 5 pm where a group of four UNL alums will share their experiences in non-academic career paths. There will be plenty of time to address any specific questions you may have. Details and short bios of the panelists can be found below:
Panelists:
Lisa Amen: A Lincoln native, Lisa attended UNL and graduated with High Distinction in 2012 with a degree in Math. Following graduation, she moved to Madison, WI to start a career with Epic, a health care software company. After 4 years with Epic, Lisa moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2016 to work directly with various hospital organizations and their use of Epic software. Now in 2020, and back living the good life in Nebraska, Lisa is navigating working-from-home as a software analyst for a hospital in California.
Katie McKeon: Katie is an early career data scientist. She received her BS in math from UNL and her PhD in number theory from Rutgers University. After a few years working for a government contractor, she is now part of a small startup team doing behavioral analytics on network data.
Shelbi Svoboda: Shelbi graduated in 2011 with majors in Mathematics and Business Administration and minors in Computer Science and Art History. Shelbi has worked in healthcare technology and thought leadership for the past nine years. Shelbi started her career at Epic in Madison, WI before moving to Washington, D.C. to work for pharmacy startup Kit Check. Shelbi now is a Senior Director of Member Development at The Academy.
Kamara Wolfe: Kamara is a Sustainment Cost Analyst with the Department of the Navy, Naval Air Systems Command. An enthusiast for logic and order, Kamara’s career as a functional Operations Research Analyst requires the application of both in the day-to-day tasks of deciphering data from various sources to generate estimates of the costs of aircraft and component operations in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. In her eight years as a U.S. Government employee Kamara has risen from entry-level data analyst to system lead sustainment cost analyst and has amassed skills and experience that make her a trusted advisor in her field. Her personal tie to the Navy drives Kamara’s passion for her work, which she uses to mentor and guide junior employees on her team. As a recent transplant to Washington state, Kamara spends her free time hiking in the Cascades with her husband and dog, sampling the culinary delights of the Pacific Northwest, enjoying coffee and a good book on her front porch, and socializing with fellow military spouses.
