UP GRADe Workshop
UP GRADe is an online workshop hosted by the Mathematics Department at UPenn aimed at undergraduates who are underrepresented minorities in math who are applying to math graduate programs this fall. We recognize the importance of encouraging and mentoring underrepresented groups in mathematics to pursue graduate study in mathematics and to seek mathematical careers. This workshop is meant to help you with the math graduate application process, as well as connect you with other mathematicians interested in creating an inclusive and supportive environment in mathematics.
The workshop will be held online on Saturday, October 30th, 2021 through the University of Pennsylvania, starting at 1 pm CDT. To register for the event, please fill out the form by Wednesday, October 27th. The first 20 registered participants will be invited to share application materials for one-on-one feedback after the workshop.
Tentative program includes:
- Advice on how to pick a grad program and what you can do before you apply (with Angela Gibney)
- Q&A panel with UPenn math faculty
- Q&A panel with UPenn math graduate students
- Networking opportunities
- (Optional) Personalized feedback on application materials
We expect the official program to end by 4 pm.
If you wish to participate in this part of the workshop, you will be asked to submit materials about a week in advance. Please help us spread the word about this event, and please encourage students from underrepresented groups who are applying to graduate school this season to register for the workshop. For students who are not graduating this year but are interested in this workshop, we plan to hold similar events — hopefully in person — starting in the spring of 2022.
