Hello Math Majors,
I hope that your semester continues to go well now that we are in the sixth week of classes. It is starting to look like the coronavirus pandemic is beginning to abate in Lincoln, which is extremely good news. While not required, I would still prefer students to wear masks during our in-person meetings.
On Monday, March 7th, open registration for the Summer 2022 semester will begin. Each summer semester is broken into four different sessions, and this summer's sessions will be as follows:
Pre-Session: Monday, May 16 to Friday, June 3 (3 weeks) - 4 credit hour limit
8-Week Session: Monday, May 16 to Friday, July 8 - 10 credit hour limit
First 5-Week Session: Monday, June 6 to Friday, July 8 - 7 credit hour limit
Second 5-Week Session: Monday, July 11 to Thursday, August 11 - 7 credit hour limit
There is also a limit of 10 total credit hours when you are enrolled in during both the 8-Week Session and either the Pre-Session or the First 5-Week Session. While it is technically possible to enroll in 18 total credit hours during a summer semester, it is unlikely that many students will be able to do so.
You should now be able to see the summer semester class schedule through MyRed and the Enrollment Scheduler, so you can start planning out your summer semester now if you plan to take classes. This also means that now is the time for us to meet to discuss your future classes for the summer and fall semesters. Some students also have required advisor meetings, so I would encourage you to start looking for an advising meeting now rather than waiting until summer open registration or fall priority registration begins. Fall 2022 Priority Registration starts on Monday, March 28th, so you should be able to see the Fall 2022 semester class schedule by Monday, March 14 at the latest.
Students on academic probation, students in their first or second semesters at UNL, or students who have completed 75+ credit hours have holds placed on their Summer 2022 or Fall 2022 semester registration. In almost all cases, I cannot lift these registration holds without a meeting to discuss how the current semester is going and what your future course plans. For students on academic probation, we may need to have a couple of meetings over the course of the semester, so I strongly, strongly encourage to schedule a meeting with me as soon as possible. Volunteers Needed
We need some volunteers to help with an in-person event on Saturday, April 2nd. On that Saturday, we are inviting high school students from across Nebraska to complete the Math Day PROBE II exam to compete for scholarships, and we will be hosting these students and their families. From about 3:30/3:45 to 4:30/4:45 pm in Willa Cather Dining Complex, Red Cloud A, these students will have some time to socialize, play Math-related games/puzzles, and learn more about the Math Program at UNL. Thus, we are looking for 3 to 5 students who would be willing to volunteer their time to meet these students and play Math-related games/puzzles.
Since these are high school students, we will need you to read and sign a short form about working with minors, which is why I am reaching out so far in advance. Volunteering for activities like these is considered when making decisions about Math Department scholarships. Please let me know if you have any questions about what we are asking for on April 2nd.
