Hello Math Majors,

Welcome back from Spring Break! I hope that you were able to enjoy yourself over spring break, and I hope that included some down time to relax and rest up for the second half of the spring semester.

Priority Registration for the Fall 2022 semester will start on Monday, March 28th, and I expect that my calendar will be pretty full with meetings. I apologize if my email response times are a bit slower, but I will get back to you as soon as I can. At this time, everyone has been assigned a Priority Registration Enrollment Appointment, which is your first opportunity to enroll in classes for the Fall 2022 semester. You already have access to the Fall 2022 semester schedule within MyRed and the Enrollment Scheduler, so you can start planning out classes and loading them into your shopping cart.

This fall, the Math Department is planning to offer the following courses along with the usually offerings of Calculus (I, II, and III), Different Equations, Linear Algebra, Intro to Mathematical Proofs, Intro to Modern Algebra, and Elementary Analysis:

MATH 408: Mathematics for High School Teaching II - only open to Secondary Education Mathematics majors and Mathematics majors pursuing the Education Option (Required for the Education Option)
MATH 412: Modern Geometry - Click here to review a sample syllabus. (Required for the Education Option)
MATH 417: Group Theory
MATH 424: Introduction to Partial Differential Equations
MATH 425: Mathematical Analysis
MATH 435: Math in the City (ACE 10 Course)
MATH 452: Graph Theory
MATH 460: History of Mathematics - Click here to review a sample syllabus. (Required for the Education Option)
MATH 489: Stochastic Processes (ACE 10 Course, Required for the Mathematical Finance Option)

Starting this fall, we are replacing MATH 350: Geometry for High School Teaching and MATH 405: Discrete and Finite Mathematics for High School Teaching with MATH 412: Modern Geometry and MATH 460: History of Mathematics. The MATH 350 and MATH 405 courses have been taught every fall semester, and they were only helpful to Secondary Education Mathematics majors and Math majors pursuing the Education option. Going forward, the MATH 412 and MATH 460 courses will count toward a Math major on any option, but they will be required courses for Secondary Education Mathematics majors and Math majors pursuing the Education option.

The MATH 412 course is an updated version of the MATH 350 course to make it more applicable to any Math major, and the link above to a sample syllabus for the course is basically an updated version of Professor Lai’s MATH 350 syllabus from last fall. The prerequisites for MATH 412 will be a proof-based Math course, so a C, Pass, or better grade in MATH 309, 310, or 325. The MATH 460 course is a new course that doesn’t have any relationship to the material taught in the MATH 405 course from past semesters, and there is also a link above to a sample syllabus for the course. The prerequisites for MATH 460 will also be a proof-based Math course, so a C, Pass, or better grade in MATH 309, 310, or 325. I expect that both courses will be introduced in a bit more depth during the Fall 2022 Course Preview Event from the Math Club, which is schedule for Thursday, April 7th at 4 pm.

Please don't hesitate to schedule a meeting with me if any questions about classes for the Summer 2022 and Fall 2022 semesters. Remember, advising-related holds on your registration for future semesters can normally NOT be lifted without a meeting, so please plan ahead.

Best wishes, Doug

CAPS Undergraduate BIPOC Therapy Group Available
Counseling and Psychological Services has a Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) Therapy group that currently meets on Wednesdays from 3:00-4:30pm on Zoom. This group is designed for undergraduate students of color to offer and receive support from peers as they develop self-awareness and insight on issues such as academics, imposter syndrome, micro-aggressions, isolation, loneliness, adjustment to college, and more. Since this is classified as a therapy group, each group member needs to be an official patient at CAPS, which consists of having an open file and having completed an Initial Evaluation appointment. At the initial evaluation appointment, students can share with the clinician that they are interested in the Undergrad BIPOC group, and the clinician can connect interested students with therapy group facilitators, Falesa and Derrick. The CAPS phone number is 402-472-7450.
