Hello Math Majors,
I hope you are doing well as we start the second week of the Fall 2022 semester. Hopefully, you have gotten settled on a class schedule for the fall semester as yesterday (Monday, August 29th) was the last day to freely drop and add classes for the Fall 2022 semester. Please try to see me immediately if you still need to make changes to your class schedule or if you haven't enrolled in a particular course. It isn't impossible to change your fall class schedule now (i.e., on Tuesday, August 30th or later), but it is going to be more challenging.
One of the keys to a successful semester is getting settled into a regular weekly schedule. This means that you are waking up at the same or similar times each weekday, that you are going to class each day based on your fall schedule, that you are studying at the same or similar times each weekday, and that you are going to sleep at the same or similar times each weekday. Most college class schedules don't have back to back to back classes, and some class schedules are going to include large time gaps between classes. You need to plan your time each semester to make sure that you are getting in the study time and the down time that you need each week. Additionally, a consistent sleep schedule will be do wonders for your motivation and your overall mental health.
It could take you a few weeks to a full month to settle into a schedule for a semester, so please don't give up if you are having trouble sticking to schedule. Are you very concerned about setting up a schedule and managing your time for the fall semester? You are not alone. I would be glad to help during an appointment or a drop-in meeting. You could attend the Time Keeps on Slippin’ Success Workshop on Wednesday, August 31st at 5 pm in 221 Love Library South. You could also meet with an Academic Success Coach in the Center for Academic Success and Transition in 110 Love Library South. Time management is not a skill that is easy to learn, so I encourage you to work hard at it and to use your resources.
Does the start of the Fall 2022 semester feel a little weird? I have heard a few students express how this semester is the first time in a long time without any additional policies or procedures due to COVID-19. This is certainly a good thing, but I know that it can feel a little strange or awkward given everything we have needed to do over the past two years. Please be kind to everyone and to give everyone that you work with or come in contact with a little grace as we readjust to the way things are now.
Academic Probation Students
Now is an excellent time to start working on your additional requirements if you find yourself on Academic Probation Level 1 or 2 for the Fall 2022 semester. In order to use your Priority Registration for Spring 2023 time, you are going to need to complete your Probation Self-Assessment form (found in MyRed within your To-Do Items in the Message Center on the left side). Then, you will need to be meet with me, and depending your situation, we might have a plan for you to complete. This will take some time, and you need to have everything complete before I can lift your hold on Spring 2023 semester enrollment. Priority Registration for Spring 2023 starts on Monday, October 28th, and I know that the time will pass quickly. You have already received a few emails about Academic Probation from the University and the College, so please plan to take action soon!
