Hello Math Majors,
I hope the first week of the full spring semester has gone well for you, and I hope that you are able to get settled into the semester this week. This semester is going to feel a little longer than usual since we started two weeks later, and the spring break week is going to be a little earlier in the semester. I would recommend keeping that in mind as you plan out the semester.
Engaging with college classes can vary a bit from class to class, but for the most part, you can get the most out of a class by doing a few straightforward things. First, you need to attend every class meeting to get the most out the class. It is understandable to miss a class meeting from time to time due to illness or life events, but you need to make an effort to maximize your class attendance. Second, you need to read your textbooks before attending the class meeting where the textbook material is covered. Most college professors will not cover every important item from the textbook. They will hit the important highlights or talk about the most difficult to understand material. Additionally, reading ahead of time will make it easier to follow the instructor's presentation during the class meeting. Third, you need to make time to review the course material on a weekly basis to help reinforce your learning over time. These weekly review sessions can help you save time in the future when it comes to studying for exams. Lastly, you need to make time to meet with your course instructor outside of class meeting times. An instructor's office hours are time for you to meet with your course instructor to discuss questions that you have about homework or past course assignments. Following these few steps will really help with your course engagement.
For the Spring 2023 semester, I am taking in-person, Zoom, and phone meetings in 45-minute blocks from 8:30 am to 12:15 pm and 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm every weekday outside of my drop-in advising hours, and I am taking drop-in meetings via Zoom only on Mondays and on Fridays from 1 pm to 3 pm.
You can schedule a meeting with me by using the Student Success Hub via this link, by calling the College of Arts and Sciences Academic and Career Advising Center at 402-472-4190, by calling me at 402-472-4319, or by emailing me at dpellatz@unl.edu.
