Hello Math and Data Science Majors,
I hope the first two weeks of the spring semester have been going well for you. I know that many of you have holds on your registration for the Fall 2024 semester for a variety of reasons, and I look forward to meeting with you throughout the month of February to resolve or to start to resolve these holds.
Checking and monitoring important dates and deadlines throughout the spring semester and every semester is an important step to your overall success as a student. I am trying to help with this by including important dates and deadlines in this weekly newsletter, but you can also do this for yourself by checking your course syllabi and the University's academic calendar.
I consider an important date or deadline to be a date or deadline that could impact your registration for the current semester, your registration for a future semester, or your success in a specific course. Important deadlines would be things like the last day to enroll in a full semester length course, the last day to apply for graduation at the end of the current semester, the last day to change a course to or from the Pass/No Pass grading option, and the last day to withdraw from a course. Important dates would be things like Priority Registration for next semester's classes, Open Registration for summer or next semester's classes, breaks from classes like Spring Break, the schedule of final exams, and due dates for individual class projects, exams, and papers. If you have questions about these dates and why they are important or what they mean, other academic advisors and I would be glad to help.
I think creating a calendar of your own of important dates and deadlines in your classes as well as in the academic calendar will help you significantly improve your navigation of the semester as a student. I would suggest doing this in a format that works best for you, but writing these dates out on a physical calendar can help with remembering the dates and make clear when some dates and deadlines will collide or coincide. This will require you to read through your syllabi and through the academic calendar, which will take some valuable time. However, I strongly believe it will be time well spent.

Spring 2024 Advising Schedule
I will taking in-person, Zoom, and phone meetings in 45-minute blocks from 8:30 am to 12:15 pm and 1:15 pm to 5:00 pm every weekday when I am not taking Zoom drop-in advising meetings. I will also be taking Zoom drop-in advising meetings on Wednesdays at 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm and Fridays at 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. Zoom drop-in meetings are being coordinated by the College of Arts and Sciences with a schedule and a link to the Zoom room available at https://cas.unl.edu/drop-in-advising-schedule.
