Advising Updates

Hello Math Majors,

The past two weeks have been kind of quiet for me as not many of you have come to see me. I'm beginning to wonder if many of you think that advising is primarily about class scheduling during the first two weeks of classes and during Priority Registration. Advising is more than that, and I know there are a few of you who should be coming to see me soon.

Anyway, now is the time to start thinking about classes for the upcoming summer and fall semesters. The class schedule and shopping cart for the Summer 2019 semester will open on MyRed on Monday, February 18. Open registration for the Summer 2019 semester will begin on Monday, March 4. The class schedule and shopping cart for the Fall 2019 semester will open on MyRed on Monday, March 4. Priority Registration for the Fall 2019 semester will begin on Monday, March 25 (immediately following spring break). If you haven't given much thought to long term course planning for your degree, now is an excellent time to do so.

Another big, big event that is coming up next week is the Spring 2019 Career Fairs. The Spring 2019 Career Fairs will take place at the Embassy Suites, and there will only be two days instead of three. The first day on Tuesday, February 12th from 1:00-5:00 pm will focus on the Business, Social & Human Services, Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources, and Government & Non-Profit sectors. The second day on Wednesday, February 13th from 1:00-5:00 pm will focus on the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics sectors. I know that there will be opportunities for Math majors to find job and internship employers on both days of the Spring 2019 Career Fair, so I would strongly encourage you to attend both fairs regardless of when you expect to looking for jobs and internships. University Career Services has posted information about the two days of Career Fair, which employers will be attending, and other important information at https://unl.joinhandshake.com/career_fairs/7972. I will be volunteering at the Career Fair on Wednesday, February 13 from 12:00-5:00 pm, and I hope to see many of you there.

There are also two Career Fair Prep events coming up this week that will be an excellent follow-up to Kristen and Meagan's presentation to Math Club last week. Career Fair Prep Night will be on Wednesday, February 6th from 4:00-5:30 pm in the Nebraska City Campus Union Centennial Room, and the All Student Practice Interview Day will be on Thursday, February 7th from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm in the Nebraska City Campus Union Career Services Office Room 225. More information about these events can be found in this newsletter.

While I'm not a Career Advisor or a Career Coach, I have some training and knowledge in how to help students find jobs and internships, prepare a resume, and prepare for an interview. At the very least, I can get you started, which is certainly better than doing nothing. As always, if you have any questions about anything, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Thanks,
Doug
