Where are you from?

Plano, TX

What gets you excited about Meteorology-Climatology?

I love watching storms roll in, especially ones with anvil tops. It was so much fun to learn what was happening in the atmosphere to create those massive clouds. I also enjoy being able to explain phenomena that I've heard so many misconceptions about, like why the sky is blue and why it turns green during intense storms and tornados.

Favorite Meteorology-Climatology class or instructor so far? Why?

I really enjoyed Physical Meteorology (METE 323). It was with Dr. Kopacz and we applied all of the equations we were learning in our other classes to physical processes. Our final was to write a research paper on a topic of our choice relating to the class material and it gave me a chance to dive deeper into the El nino-La nina cycle which was very interesting. I know everyone in my class enjoyed this project.

What are you excited about doing after graduation?

I am looking at applying to grad school. After talking with a number of professors, current grad students, and other colleges tables at the national American Meteorological Society Conference, getting my masters or even PhD and pursuing a deeper understanding of meteorology through research is slowly becoming the path I want to go down.

What is a goal you have accomplished as a Husker?

I just recently got involved in university research. I am working with Dr. Kopacz on her ASER research which focuses on education research related to how atmospheric science is being taught. I have wanted to do research since my older sister got involved at her institution, and I am so excited to have the opportunity.

What do you wish you would have known when you started as a Meteorology-Climatology Major that you know now?

I wish I had known how much math and physics were involved in the major. I did well in my classes in these subjects after a bit of an adjustment period, and I actually ended up loving Physics Two (PHYS 212), but it was a bit of a shock to me how much math is required for the major. It also really helped that everyone in my grade was in the same classes. We discussed math and physics together and it helped me understand what I was learning better.

What do you hope to cross off your “bucket list” in the next few years?

I hope to do a UCARE project before I graduate. I've had a couple of conversations with professors about starting a research project of my own and there are so many avenues to go down with atmospheric science research. I'm excited to have more meetings and figure out how to get started.
