Hello Meteorology-Climatology Majors,
I hope you are doing well during this short week of classes before the Thanksgiving Holiday break. With only two weeks before final exams and with the Thanksgiving Holiday this week, I felt it was a good time to talk about gratitude.
Oxford’s English dictionary defines Gratitude as the the quality of being thankful. Over the Thanksgiving Holiday, many people will reflect upon what they are thankful for in their lives. This reflection or practicing gratitude can be a powerful tool in our daily lives as it allows you to reframe your current stress or hardship as temporary. Spending a few minutes thinking about what you are thankful for can do wonders for a stressed mind, and I highly recommend that you try it as the semester draws to a close.

Importance of Getting Enrolled for Next Semester
I know that this time of the semester is very busy, so I know that there are many demands on your time and for your attention. However, I want to urge you to spend some time on building your schedule and enrolling in classes for the Spring 2024 semester if you have not already done so. There are a couple of reasons why this is so important for you and your course options.
First, the longer you wait to enroll in Spring 2024 classes, the more likely it becomes that you won't be able to enroll in a particular class that you want, or worse need, for the Spring 2024 semester due to the class becoming full. Classes will become full or at least fuller as we get closer to the start of the Spring 2024 semester, and there are limits on how many students can be in a particular course or section of a course. Full classes will make your course options more limited, and they will likely make your schedule less than ideal. These are the reasons why we have Priority Registration and that I encourage you to use your priority.
Second, the longer you wait to enroll in Spring 2024 classes, the more likely a department will need to cancel a class due to low enrollment. The College at the direction of the University has set a minimum enrollment for a class to be run, and the minimum number varies depending on the level of the course (i.e., lower level courses need a larger number of students to enroll). If you wait to enroll, a course that you want to take could be canceled. While it is rare for a required course to be canceled, the College may request that sections of a required course be combined, which limits your options for enrolling. Most departments really do not want to cancel planned courses, and they need you to do your part by getting enrolled.
Lastly, the courses available during the Spring 2024 Pre-Session have very strictly enforced minimum enrollments to be run. If you are interested in a Pre-Session course, I would urge you to enroll now even if you have questions about whether the course is appropriate for you or your plans. You would still be able to back out of taking the course if it isn't a good fit for you, but enrolling now will still keep your option to take the course open. It may also keep the option to take the course open for other students.
Open Registration
We are now in Open Registration for the Spring 2024 semester until Monday, January 1st (for Pre-Session courses) or Sunday, January 21st (for full semester courses). If you have a hold on your MyRed account that prevents registration in classes, you will not be able to enroll until hold is lifted. Information about holds can be found within the MyRed Message Center. If you have questions about a hold, please contact me or the office listed under the hold information. It is also important to be mindful of To Do items in your MyRed Message Center as sometimes these To Do items can turn into holds. If you are on Probation this semester, we must meet to discuss your academics in order for your Probation hold on enrolling in Spring 2024 semester classes to be removed.
Now is the time to enroll in classes for the Spring 2024 semester, so please don't hesitate to schedule a meeting with me to discuss any questions you have about classes or degree requirements.

Fall 2023 Advising
I am taking in-person, Zoom, and phone meetings in 45-minute blocks from 8:30 am to 12:15 pm and 1:15 pm to 5:00 pm every weekday when I am not taking Zoom drop-in advising meetings. I am also take Zoom drop-in advising meetings on Wednesdays and Fridays at 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.
