Meteorology Summer-Fall 2024 Field Work Application

Hello Meteorology-Climatology Majors,

Dr. Houston has two projects this summer/fall that will provide paid opportunities for undergraduates.

MITTEN-CI
This project will focus on lake breezes and is led by Dr. Jason Keeler at Central Michigan University. It will involve the operation of a UNL Combined Mesonet and Tracker (CoMeT) in Michigan in July. There are two periods of operation that will be covered by two separate UNL teams. You only need to be available for one of the two periods.

Period 1: 28 June – 17 July
Period 2: 14 July – 2 August
Stipend: $3,000/period
Lodging, travel, and food will be provided.

Urban Heat Island Project
This project will focus on the urban heat island and will involve flying or assisting in drone operation, launching radiosondes, and the operation of CoMeTs. There will be two operations periods: the first will be around Lincoln in August and the second will be in Tulsa, OK in September. You only need to be available for one of the two periods, but preference will be given to students who can participate in both.

Period 1 (Lincoln): 4-10 August
Period 2 (Tulsa): 7-14 September (this is expected to be treated as an excused absence from classes)
Stipend: $1,500/period
Travel and food will be provided (lodging will be provided for the Tulsa project)

For each period you must be able to commit to the entire period of operations.

Students will take part in a range of activities associated with the projects. Possible responsibilities include:
• Driving CoMeTs
• Navigating
• Meteorological situational awareness
• Forecasting
• Operating drones
• Launching radiosondes

Prior experience participating in atmospheric science field campaigns is not required but will be considered in the review.
