We are excited to invite you to explore the new Undergraduate Research & Fellowships (URAF) website! Most common advising questions are covered in our recorded information sessions and workshops. Students can attend upcoming information sessions and group application support events.
International Fellowships: Learn Languages Abroad!
• Critical Language Scholarship (CLS): U.S. students can learn 1 of 14 languages in fully-funded summer study abroad or virtual programs. External deadline: November 19, 2024. URAF advising is optional, mainly group events.
• Boren Awards: Encourages U.S. students to engage in long-term (a semester or more) study of languages and cultures deemed critical to U.S. national security interests. URAF personalized advising, essay draft review, and campus endorsement (nomination) is required. Contact courtney.santos@unl.edu by December 2, 2024.
Language Learning Fellowships Information Sessions
Undergraduate Research & Fellowships Director Courtney Santos will discuss international fellowship opportunities for learning languages, including the Critical Language Scholarship, Boren Awards, and Gilman Scholarships. Learn about eligibility, how to apply, strategies for writing strong application materials, and how to access undergraduate advising resources at UNL.

Critical Language Scholarship Drop-Ins
CLS is UNL’s 2nd most popular fellowship, and individual advising appointments are limited during the six-week application period. Graduate Assistant, Ioanna Kipourou, and URAF will offer drop-in advising and essay feedback on the following dates:
• November 13, 1:30 – 3:00 pm
• November 14, 10:00 – 11:30 am
• November 18, 12:30 – 2:30 pm
Undergraduate Fellowships: Goldwater, Truman & more!
• Goldwater Scholarship: Supports U.S. sophomores and juniors who show exceptional promise of becoming research leaders in the natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics. URAF personalized advising, essay draft review, and campus endorsement (nomination) is required. Contact courtney.santos@unl.edu by November 5, 2024.
• Truman Scholarship for Public Service: Provides U.S. junior undergraduates, who have demonstrated exceptional leadership potential and commitment to public service, with professional development resources and graduate school funding to advance public service careers. URAF personalized advising, essay draft review, and campus endorsement (nomination) is required. Contact courtney.santos@unl.edu by November 5, 2024.
• Department of Defense (DoD) SMART Scholarship: Provides undergraduate or graduate students with a full tuition scholarship, paid summer internship, and guaranteed employment at Department of Defense (DoD) laboratories. External deadline: December 6, 2024. URAF advising is optional (by appointment).

International Education Week (IEW): Fulbright Session
Fulbright U.S. Student Program: U.S. graduating seniors, alumni, or graduate students can spend a full academic year abroad building mutual understanding with other nations, while teaching English, conducting research or arts projects, or earning a graduate degree. External deadline: Early October 2025. URAF Events, Advising, and Campus Endorsement (Nomination): Mid-May – Late September 2025.
In celebration of IEW (November 18-22), we will co-host a Fulbright U.S. Student Program Group Presentation Session with representatives of the Fulbright/Institute of International Education team!
