In this course, we will examine a range of health-related topics from a feminist perspective. We will begin with an overview of key concepts that we will revisit throughout the semester (e.g., feminist analysis, social construction, intersectionality). Next, we will cover a variety of topics, such as anatomy and menstruation, sex and sexual health, reproductive control, pregnancy and childbirth, body and body image, substance use and abuse, illness and chronic conditions, and the healthcare system and healthcare policy. Each week we will cover foundational knowledge on these topics, use a feminist lens to think critically about health, and consider how the intersections between social identities (such as gender identity, race, ethnicity, sexual identity, ability, class) play a role in health experiences and disparities.
No prerequisites or prior knowledge of feminism, gender, or health are required. This class is scheduled to be taught in-person (subject to change given COVID-19 conditions). Email Professor Kathryn Holland with any questions (kholland4@unl.edu).
