Welcome to the start of the 2021-22 academic year in the Microbiology Program! Despite the continuing pandemic and recent rise in cases of COVID-19, the start of another year brings excitement and promise. This year is no exception. We are looking forward to an exciting year that includes a new Microbiology research symposium on November 12 (save the date) as well as Microbiology Club activities. These events will provide additional opportunities to learn more about the microbial and viral world and allow you to explore an area of your interest and inspire career development.
As a reminder, we are here to support you and your success at the UNL. Please do continue to explore the many courses that are offered and speak with your advisors and Dr. Brandi Sigmon, the program’s Academic Success Coordinator, to explore all the experiential learning opportunities available to you. If you face any challenges, please do not hesitate to reach out to any of us in the Microbiology Office. We will do our best to assist you or facilitate a solution. Welcome back everyone! My name is Brandi Sigmon and I’m the Academic Success Coordinator for the Microbiology Program. I wanted to let you all know we have a couple exciting new experiential learning opportunities this fall that will be open to all Microbiology majors. This semester the Microbiology Program will be starting a new MARVEL (Microbiology Achievement through Research and Valuable Experiential Learning) workshop and research symposium to help enhance equity and inclusion in experiential learning opportunities within the major. The new workshop will be held on Friday, October 22nd from 3-5pm and the research symposium will be on November 12th from 3-5pm. More details on both of these events will be coming soon via email, but be sure to save the dates on your calendar!
The Microbiology Club is getting ready for an awesome semester! If you would like to join a club with great educational opportunities and socialize with fellow microbiology majors, you are welcome to come to our first meeting of the Fall 2021 Semester!
The COVID-19 Saliva Collector will be responsible for registering participants for and assisting with collection of saliva samples from UNL faculty, staff, or students for COVID testing. The Collector will watch the patient (participant) spit into a collection tube, close the tube, and then will collect the sample, and place it in a collections bin. This process will take less than two minutes and will be repeated several times within a shift. They will also be responsible for setup and close-down duties, sanitizing work area, and keeping inventory stock full. This person will be required to be in full PPE which is provided.
