Join Abendmusik for a Midday Soireé combining performances of Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem, sung by the University Singers from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Glenn Korff School of Music with the Abendmusik Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Peter Eklund, and Francis Poulenc’s Concerto for Organ, Strings and Timpani with organ soloist Tom Trenney, under the direction of conductor Jeremy Bankson. The concert is on Sunday, February 15 at 4 p.m. at First-Plymouth Church, 20th and D Streets in Lincoln. There will be a 3 p.m. concert pre-talk where Dr. Pamela Starr (Professor of Music at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Glenn Korff School of Music) will discuss the history of the pieces and their composers. This concert is presented in memory of the late Michele Deaton of the Glenn Korff School of Music.

Dedicated to the memory of his father, Durufle’s Requiem was published in 1947 and calls for SATB choir with mezzo-soprano and baritone soloist. Three orchestrations exist, and this performance will utilize the version for strings, trumpets, harp, timpani and organ. At the time of its composition, Duruflé was working on an organ suite using themes from Gregorian chants, and he incorporated his sketches for that work into this setting of the Requiem text. Nearly all the thematic material for this work comes from chant.

The first premiere of Poulenc’s Concerto for Organ Strings and Timpani was actually played by Maurice Duruflé in 1938. The piece was almost certainly influenced by the death of a colleague and friend which caused Poulenc to go on a pilgrimage to the Black Virgin of Rocamadour, where he rediscovered his Christian faith. Showcasing the Lied organ will be nationally renowned organist Tom Trenney who is Minister of Music at First-Plymouth and also the Artistic Director of Abendmusik.
