The energy is abundant at the Nebraska Show Choir Camp at the Glenn Korff School of Music on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus.

The campers arrived on Sunday and will be singing, dancing and learning the whole week long until it culminates with 3 p.m. concert in Kimball Recital Hall.

One of those taking part is Dakota Mathew, who will be a freshman Vocal Music Education major at UNL in the fall. He’s made the trip to camp this summer from Harrisonville, Missouri.

“I've sung my whole life,” Mathew said. “My dad is the choir director at my high school so I have a decent amount of experience.”

This is the third time at the Nebraska Show Choir Camp for Mathew. His dad originally heard about it from UNL Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activites Pete Eklund, who is also the Nebraska Show Choir Camp founder and director.

“He (dad) then asked me if I wanted to go and I said yes! I've loved it ever since!”

Mathew has been very active at Harrisonville High School. He’s been in Show Choir, Missouri All-State Chorus, been a part of drama department performances as well as part of the Symphonic and Marching Bands.

“My favorite part about camp is the grind during the week,” Mathew said. “I love working hard because it makes the performance at the end of the week that much more rewarding.

“I hope to grow as a musician and to get confident in my dancing abilities.”
