From being a member, to alum and now as a staff member, Michaela Vestecka is super excited to be named the Color Guard Instructor for the Cornhusker Marching Band.

“UNL Bands is excited to introduce the new Color Guard Instructor for the Cornhusker Marching Band, Michaela Vestecka,” said Associate Director of Bands and Director of the Cornhusker Marching Band Tony Falcone. “Vestecka is an alum of the Band and has been active as a choreographer and instructor for area high schools since graduation. Please help us welcome Michaela!”

Vestecka was on the UNL Flagline from 2006-2010 (her freshman through super-senior year).

“The color guard and CMB were actually one of the main reasons I chose to attend UNL,” Vestecka said. “Band/color guard was one of my main outlets and social groups in high school and I was glad I got to continue that in college. The band and flagline were some of my first college friends and have remained so to this day.”

Vestecka was in color guard in high school (Lincoln Pius X) for three years prior to auditioning for the UNL Flagline. While on the UNL Flagline, she coached the Pius Flagline for three years (2009-2011). For the past three years she has coached the color guard at Nebraska City High School.

“I want to...

* use my passion and talents in both teaching and color guard to give back to the organization that I count as one of the best experiences of my life;

* put out clean, solid, routines that visually enhance the music performed by the CMB;

* continue the strong pride and traditions the band is known for;

* write quality and fun routines that highlight the skills and talents of the members of the UNL Flagline while also challenging them with new material so they can add to and enhance their skill sets,” she said.

Starting this fall, she will also be teaching Family and Consumer Sciences at Mickle Middle School in Lincoln. The last four years she taught FACS at Nebraska City Middle School where she also started a chapter of FCCLA - Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America.

“Returning to my alma mater as Color Guard Instructor will bring my membership in ‘The Pride of All Nebraska’ full circle,” she said. “I am super excited to start working with the amazing students and staff of the CMB! GO BIG RED!”
