Guest Artist Watkins to perform in Westbrook

Scott Watkins
Scott Watkins

Scott Watkins, Professor of Piano at Jacksonville University in Florida, presents a recital program on Sunday, November 11 at 3 p.m. in the Glenn Korff School of Music’s Westbrook Recital Hall, which includes Franz Schubert’s Four Impromptus, Op. 90, and Franz Liszt’s “Legend of St. Francis Walking on the Waves,” Petrarc Sonnets 123 & 104, and “Valleé d’Obermann.”

Also featured on the program is Nebraska composer Howard Hanson’s “Symphonic Rhapsody” for solo piano, a work which Watkins discovered, unpublished and still in the composer’s manuscript, at the Eastman School of Music while researching for his upcoming book on Hanson. The work was published in 2017 (with Watkins as editor) by Carl Fischer. Watkins recorded Hanson’s Piano Sonata, Op. 11, in 2014, a world premiere recording of the complete Hanson work, and he gave the first New York performance of the work in 2015. Of this recital, Rorianne Schrade wrote for the New York Concert Review that Watkins played “with excellent attention to detail and respect for the score… with the fidelity of a music historian.” Schrade concluded: “He plays with the requisite clarity, but with great sweeps and washes of sound when required.”

Watkins has appeared as recitalist, chamber musician, and soloist with orchestras in more than thirty countries around the world. He has given four solo recitals at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, and has performed at The Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., and at Chicago’s Cultural Center.

The performance is free and open to the public. Please visit scottwatkinspianist.com for more information on the performer.
