Nebraska teachers at the grade 6-12 level are invited to apply to attend the 2014 Earth Science Institute to learn more about Earth science and the geology of Nebraska. The Earth Science Institute will hold a series of three hands-on workshops to educate teachers and provide them with materials that they can import into their curriculum. Since one of the best ways to learn about geology is in the field, time will be spent outside exploring the geology of Nebraska.

The focus of the 2014 workshop series is the hydrosphere. Topics of discussion include: precipitation, floods, rivers, groundwater, oceans, glaciers, as well as the processes that connect them and the role that the water cycle plays on landform development and environmental issues. Workshops will be held at locations that are ideally situated to field-based learning.

Each participant will receive a stipend of $100 per day for participating in the workshop series. Applicants must have the opportunity to teach earth science or incorporate earth science content into courses taught in the Fall 2014.

The Earth Science Institute is currently accepting applications for 2 cohorts:

Cedar Point Cohort:
The first cohort will meet at Cedar Point Biological Station June 23-26, 2014 for a four-day intensive workshop (lodging and meals will be provided). Two follow-up workshops will be held: a half day workshop during the 2014 NATS conference (Sept 25-27) with a final one-day workshop to be held near Ogallala on October 25. This workshop series is geared toward teachers in rural Nebraska.

Quarry Oaks Cohort:
The second cohort will meet at Quarry Oaks near Ashland, Neb., from July 14-17, 2014. Lunches will be provided. Two follow-up workshops will be held: a half-day workshop during the 2014 NATS conference (Sept. 25-27) with a final one-day workshop to be held in the Omaha/Lincoln area on November 8. This workshop series is geared toward teachers in the Omaha/Lincoln region.
