Take a graduate course in just one week for face-to-face instruction with small class sizes through the Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institutes (NMSSI). NMSSI graduate courses allow you to take advantage of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's professional development opportunities conveniently and affordably.
This summer we are pleased to announce a new course, GEOS 898: Nebraska Geology through Time (Class # 3319), which will be offered in Lincoln from July 9-13, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., in 203 Bessey Hall, for grades K-12 teachers with Dr. Cara Burberry of UNL.
This course is a one-week tour through key events in the geologic history of Nebraska. We will begin 1.8 billion years ago, with the mountain-building events that created the oldest rocks in Nebraska. Subsequently, we will step through time in chronological order, taking a couple of half-day field trips to look at ~300 million-year-old rocks within easy driving distance of Lincoln. The course includes a tour of the paleontology displays in the State Museum, learning in detail about the Highway Paleontology program and Nebraska's Cenozoic Megafauna. We will finish with an overview of relatively recent (~5 million year) geomorphologic and geologic process in Nebraska, so that students are equipped to incorporate Nebraska-based examples into a variety of learning modules.
For all on-site, in-person NMSSI courses, current Nebraska teachers automatically qualify for a tuition reduction equal to 20 percent of in-state, graduate tuition. Additionally, Nebraska K-12 teachers can apply for supplemental NMSSI Fellowships to further defray tuition costs for NMSSI courses. Read more about the costs. The NMSSI Fellowship Application is now open.
To enroll in UNL graduate courses, follow the steps outlined on the website. This summer we are offering 25 courses across the state and online to meet your professional development needs.
The Benefits of the NMSSI:
• Nebraska teachers automatically qualify for a 20 percent discount on in-state tuition at UNL
• Teachers can also apply for an additional tuition fellowship from the NMSSI: http://go.unl.edu/scimathapply
• Each course is worth 3 graduate credit hours at UNL
