National Ugly Sweater Day is coming up on December 18, 2020, so get ready to celebrate this quirky holiday. We've compiled a list of virtual activities for you to have a fun Ugly Sweater Day while also reconnecting with far-away friends.

  1. Host a Virtual Party
Even if people need to keep to themselves physically, there's no reason you can't be together virtually. Having a virtual holiday party is a surefire way to socialize while still keeping safe.
    • Compete in an ugly sweater contest
This may seem like the most obvious ugly sweater day activity of all, but it's a classic nonetheless. Competing for the prize of "ugliest sweater" can sprinkle in some festivity to your virtual party and set a fun tone for the day to see which friend can outdo the others at the party.
    • Play some virtual games
There is a wide variety of virtual games that everyone will love playing over Zoom or FaceTime. Try solving a virtual escape room, or play Pictionary using the Zoom whiteboard feature. Popular games like Mafia or trivia can easily be adapted to a virtual setting as well.

  2. Bring in some themed snacks
Snacks are always an essential aspect of any holiday. Your friends can either prepare food separately, or have a cooking party over Zoom.
    • Bake Together
Send out a recipe before the celebration so everyone can get ingredients ahead of time. Then, take turns reading out the instructions so everyone can do each step together. While your individual concoctions bake, take time to catch up and possibly play a game. Later, you can all enjoy a treat together fresh out of the oven.
    • Holiday Trail Mix
If you don't want to bake in real time, you can also set up some yummy snacks that you won't have to wait to enjoy. One option is some holiday-themed trail mix or popcorn, which is available this season at several retailers. Look for selections with peppermint, caramel or chocolate flavors to get in the right spirit.
    • Your Favorite Type of Holiday Bark
Dessert bark is an easy snack to whip up before any celebration. It doesn't take long to make and is easy to prepare. Try out salted caramel, cookies n' cream or peppermint bark to enjoy during your upcoming virtual events. Since batches are large, you could even wrap some pieces up beforehand and send them to your friends or family.

  3. Create your own ugly sweater
There's no better way to get in the holiday spirit by putting in the extra-fun effort of making your very own ugly sweater.
    • Snowman Sweater
One sweater theme perfectly suited to any winter celebration is a snowman. Check out this photo for ideas or use a tutorial as your guide.
    • Reindeer Sweater
A reindeer is the perfect winter animal to display on a festive outfit. Check out this Pinterest photo for inspiration or follow this tutorial for more specific directions.
    • Make a matching "ugly mask"
If you have some extra ribbon, glitter or tinsel, add it onto a plain mask to create your own matching set. A custom combination is sure to win at any ugly sweater competition.
