The Midwest is known for its sometimes-brutal summer humidity, and it can be hard to find new solutions for beating the heat. Check out some of these local swimming spots to cool off and enjoy the water. Whether you prefer lakes, pools or waterparks, you're sure to find your new favorite destination here.

Star City Shores Aquatic Center
If you're living near campus, Star City Shores is your closest option for a waterpark. This spot contains a zero-depth entry area as well as multiple large slides and other fun water features, complete with a regular swimming pool. Admission is $6.

Branched Oak Lake
Fans of natural swimming areas will appreciate all that Branched Oak Lake has to offer. Here you'll find a spacious beach on a clean sand-bottom lake, with lots of swimming space to avoid crowds. There are also picnic tables and large trees where you can relax in the shade. A daily park pass is $6 per car.

Find your nearest public city pool
There are multiple types of city pools, with slightly different ticket prices. The first category consists of neighborhood pools. These locations include just the essentials, consisting of sun patios, diving boards and a typical swimming area. You can attend any of these pools, even if you don't live in the surrounding neighborhood. Admission for neighborhood pools is $5.25. Lincoln's neighborhood options are Arnold, Ballard, Belmont, Eden, Irvingdale and Woods pool.

The second type of city pool is the aquatic center. These pools contain a few more highlights such as spray features, slides and basketball hoops. Daily admission is $5.75. Highlands or University Place Aquatic Center are two options for this category.

Campus Rec Center
Sometimes you may just want to get in a solid swimming workout. If you're taking UNL summer classes, or have paid the summer campus recreation fee, you can head over to the Campus Recreation Center to use the lap pool. This large indoor pool has lane markers and locker rooms to store your belongings. Check out hours and more information here.

Indoor YMCA pool
Local YMCA locations offer day passes for $12, and include lap pools, differing pool depths and slides. The Fallbrook YMCA is closest to campus, but the Cooper location is also a good nearby option.

Mahoney State Park Waterpark
If you're willing to drive about half an hour from town, this park has lots of swimming space and a huge wave pool, perfect for riding the waves for hours. You'll also find water slides and a concession area. Mahoney daily permits are $8.
