First-year students quickly find a community of friends when they live in Learning Communities (LC) at Nebraska. They also find a network of support from their LC peer mentors.
“The best part of being a mentor is the relationships you build in the learning community,” said Alex Neill, a peer mentor in the Sports Media and Communications Learning Community.
Peer mentors are upper-division students who provide support to first-year students in the LC as they transition to life at UNL. Mentors work with faculty and staff to enhance the first-year experience by planning and leading co-curricular programs.
“We planned a research symposium for the chemistry LC,” Clarissa Mason, a peer mentor for 'Chemistry: In Our Element' explained. “I brought in a few professors who worked with students to create research presentations on techniques they’d use in their professions in the future.”
Upper-division students interested in mentoring LC students can learn more about the position at go.unl.edu/peer-mentors. Applications are being accepted through Feb. 18.
