Learn in place with NMSSI online

At a time of social distancing when many of us are converting our classes (both K-12 and collegiate) to remote learning, using Zoom, email, Canvas, and other means, UNL’s Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institutes (NMSSI) is making a renewed commitment to teacher learning. Just as much of the nation is expected to shelter in place, we encourage teachers to “learn in place.”

For Summer 2020, all NMSSI courses will be offered using remote learning approaches. As a result, the NMSSI program will offer teachers expanded opportunities for graduate education while removing the barrier of travel.

UNL has made several decisions that will result in substantial savings for graduate students taking summer classes. Tuition will be set at the in-person rate ($332 per credit hour for Nebraska residents and $652 for non-residents). Moreover, UNL will waive both the University Program and Facilities Fee (UPFF) and the Online Course Fee. Students will still be responsible for the registration, technology, and library fees that are needed to support summer instruction (a cost of only $51.75 per course plus a one-time $20 fee on top of tuition).

NMSSI courses offer two additional benefits: a 20% tuition discount for Nebraska teachers and a special NMSSI Fellowship for Nebraska teachers. You can apply now for an NMSSI Fellowship.

To see the courses planned for Summer 2020, look at our catalog, which include courses for new cohorts of Primarily Math, ITEAM, and Math in the Middle. Courses will be offered utilizing several instructional models that will support teachers in different ways. Some are traditional online courses (i.e., asynchronous) offered over a five-week summer session. Others will use a synchronous approach, with most or all instruction concentrated during a two-week period. Please bear with us as we adapt to remote learning and reach closure on the instructional model to be used for each course. If course details are tentative, that is noted in the course description. Please email us at nebraskamath@unl.edu with any questions.

Possibly more than any other university in the Nation, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the NMSSI have developed, studied, and revised a large number of superb mathematics courses for teachers with the support of three major NSF grants: Math in the Middle, NebraskaMATH, and NebraskaNOYCE. As a result, teachers can anticipate both mathematics and pedagogy courses that emphasize mathematical knowledge for teaching. This is a good opportunity to take beneficial graduate courses at a low cost and at a time when most of our summer plans have been disrupted.

NMSSI Fellowships are generously supported by funds at the University of Nebraska Foundation including the Don Miller Fund, the Jim and Doris Lewis Fund and the Linda Bors Fund (Department of Mathematics); the Brownell Fund (Department of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education); and the Math and Science Teachers for the 21st Century Fund (Center for Science, Mathematics and Computer Education).
