Two pairings of secondary math courses available this summer

“Learn in place” this summer and take two graduate courses online as a pair, utilizing substantial savings through the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institutes.

The NMSSI is offering two pairings of math and math pedagogy courses for secondary math teachers. In June, Math 811T: Functions for High School Teachers is being offered June 1-12 in a synchronous setup, with some live Zoom meetings. TEAC 892: Integrating Mathematics Teaching and Learning will be offered June 8-July 10, asynchronously, allowing you to work at your own pace.

In July, Math 812T: Geometry for Geometry Teachers is being offered July 6-17 in a synchronous setup. TEAC 892: Integrating Geometry Teaching and Learning will be offered July 13-24, also synchronously. While both courses overlap for one week, the Zoom meetings will set up for different times. (Note: Both sections of TEAC 892 require a permission code, which can be requested at https://cehs.unl.edu/tlte/graduate-student-resources. Scroll down to ‘Permission Code Requests’ and it will take you into MyRED.)

In both cases, this scheduling allows you to work on the math course for one full week before starting the pedagogy course. Note that it is not required to take both courses, but the content is designed to go well together if taken concurrently.

For detailed course descriptions, please see our course catalog: https://scimath.unl.edu/nmssi/2020/course-catalog/. Teachers wanting to earn a master’s degree should apply for the “Mathematics – MAT” degree at https://go.unl.edu/gradapp.

For Summer 2020, the cost of online tuition per credit hour now matches the more affordable in-person rate, and the University Program and Facilities Fee (UPFF) and the Online Course Fee are both being waived. As a result, an online course that would have cost $1,176 for a Nebraska resident is now $868.55 with the 20% tuition discount from the NMSSI program. Read more about the costs at: https://scimath.unl.edu/nmssi/2020/costs.

NMSSI Fellowships, typically $300 per course, can further reduce the cost of one course to $568.55. Current Nebraska classroom teachers should apply for NMSSI Fellowships at https://go.unl.edu/scimathapply. Start by creating an account on our CSMCE Application Portal.

The Benefits of the NMSSI:
• Each course is worth 3 graduate credit hours
• Courses will be offered utilizing several instructional models to allow for flexibility in scheduling
• Teachers can apply for a tuition fellowship from the NMSSI: https://go.unl.edu/scimathapply
