Take advantage of summer savings on graduate courses for primary teachers

Take advantage of savings of up to $600 by enrolling in a graduate course for primary teachers this summer through the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institutes.

As UNL transitions to online learning for all summer courses, the NMSSI program is making a renewed commitment to teacher learning. Just as much of the nation is expected to shelter in place, we encourage teachers to “learn in place.”

An online course that would have cost $1,176 for a Nebraska resident is now $868.55 with the 20% tuition discount from the NMSSI program. NMSSI Fellowships, typically $300 per course, can further reduce the cost of one course to $568.55. Current Nebraska classroom teachers should apply for NMSSI Fellowships at https://go.unl.edu/scimathapply. Start by creating an account on our CSMCE Application Portal.

Two courses for primary teachers to consider this summer are:

Math 804P: Problem Solving and Critical Thinking for the Elementary Classroom (Class # 8597, Section 595)
This course will be offered as asynchronous in just two weeks, from June 22-July 3, and you will be able to work at your own pace. Math 804P seeks to build a strong foundation for the teaching and communication of mathematical concepts by the hands-on development of critical-thinking skills via problem-solving experiences. It provides a guided opportunity for the implementation of problem-solving instruction that is aligned with the Nebraska mathematics standards in both the primary (K-2) and intermediate (3-5) elementary classroom.

Math 803P: Algebraic Thinking for the Elementary Classroom (Class # 10288, Section 691)
This course will use a synchronous approach, with live Zoom meetings with the whole class and instructor at least two hours each day, during the two-week period of July 13-17 and July 20-24. Math 803P will explore Algebraic Thinking in K-4 Mathematics. Participants will examine case studies, video segments and student work samples. Discussion will revolve around student understanding of Algebraic properties of mathematics. Participants will explore instructional strategies for fostering Algebraic thinking and eliciting high-level mathematical discourse in both the primary (K-2) and intermediate (3-5) elementary classrooms.

For more course options, see https://scimath.unl.edu/nmssi/2020/course-catalog/. Primary teachers may also want to apply for the Primarily Math program, which has a deadline of May 12: https://scimath.unl.edu/primarilymath.

The Benefits of the NMSSI:
• Each course is worth 3 graduate credit hours
• Courses will be offered utilizing several instructional models to allow for flexibility in scheduling
• Enroll in one simple application as a post-bac student at https://go.unl.edu/gradapp
• Teachers can apply for a tuition fellowship from the NMSSI: https://go.unl.edu/scimathapply
