Limited number of fellowships available for Math 803P
A limited number of tuition fellowships worth $500 are now available for Math 803P: Algebraic Thinking for the Elementary Classroom through the Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institutes (NMSSI). The NMSSI Summer 2021 Fellowship application can be accessed at https://go.unl.edu/scimathapply.
In Math 803P (Class # 3190), July 5-16 (Monday-Friday), from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m., teachers will examine case studies, video segments, and student work samples. Discussion will revolve around student understanding of Algebraic properties of mathematics. Participants will explore instructional strategies for fostering Algebraic thinking and eliciting high-level mathematical discourse in both the primary (K-2) and intermediate (3-5) elementary classrooms. This course is often taken by Primarily Math teachers, either before or after the program, to prepare or supplement their mathematical knowledge for teaching.
Nebraska teachers automatically qualify for a 20% tuition discount for all web conferencing courses. Teachers can apply for supplemental NMSSI fellowships to further defray tuition costs. A $500 NMSSI fellowship can reduce the cost of one web conferencing course, such as Math 803P, to $390.15. If you don’t already have an account on the CSMCE Application Portal, start by creating an account.
Here are some quotes from teachers who have previously taken Math 803P:
• I have enjoyed this class and am so excited to share what I have learned with the teachers at my school.
• I really like being able to see the connections between standards and strategies.
• I liked the place value ideas – especially introducing the vocabulary after much practice. The rounding is definitely how I’ll teach it next year!
• Working with my classmates and sharing ideas helps me see the problems more clearly. I hope this is reflected in my classroom.
