Math 807T: Using Mathematics to Understand our World

Use Math to Understand our World

In this course, grades 7-12 teachers will use math to solve a murder mystery and learn how to build a thermometer to measure and compare temperatures – and many more exploratory projects. Teachers consistently report that 807T is one of their favorite courses in the NMSSI.

In Math 807T (Class # 5418), July 8-19 from 1-5 pm on Zoom (with breaks), teachers will examine the mathematics underlying several socially relevant questions from a variety of academic disciplines. Mathematical models of problems will be constructed and studied using a variety of topics and basic skills in algebra, functions, statistics and probability. Sources will include original documentation whenever possible (such as government data, reports and research papers) in order to provide a sense of the very real role that mathematics plays in society.

A limited number of tuition fellowships worth $300 are now available for Math 807T: Using Mathematics to Understand our World through the Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institutes (NMSSI). The NMSSI Summer 2024 Fellowship application can be accessed at https://go.unl.edu/scimathapply.

Nebraska teachers automatically qualify for a 20% tuition discount for all web conferencing courses. Teachers can apply for supplemental NMSSI fellowships to further defray tuition costs. A NMSSI fellowship can reduce the cost of one web conferencing course, such as Math 807T, to $887.33. If you don’t already have an account on the CSMCE Application Portal, start by creating an account.
