Graduate courses for teachers offered in Columbus, Norfolk

With the NeSA-M now in place, Nebraska teachers of all grade levels are stepping up to strengthen mathematics achievement in their schools. Now more than ever teachers need new learning opportunities to help them offer high quality math courses to their students. The Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institutes (NMSSI) offer graduate mathematics and pedagogy courses using a teacher-friendly delivery model that helps teachers respond to this challenge.

To make the NMSSI professional development opportunities more affordable, UNL has agreed to offer tuition discounts to Nebraska teachers who take our summer courses. Nebraska teachers automatically qualify for a Tuition Fellowship (20% of in-state tuition) for these graduate courses. By applying through Teach Nebraska, the $50 grad school admission fee is also waived. Teachers may apply for additional fellowships from NMSSI to help cover tuition costs: http://scimath.unl.edu/nmssi. All NMSSI courses also include a free lunch.

This summer, MATH 802T: Functions, Algebra and Geometry, will be offered in Norfolk from June 10-14 (Class # 3266, Section # 951), and MATH 896/803P: Algebraic Thinking for the Elementary Classroom (Class # 11446, Section # 952), will be offered in Columbus from June 17-21. The target audience for MATH 802T is grades 6-9 teachers, while the target audience for MATH 896/803P is grades K-5. Your school should have received a flier in the mail last week about these and other courses.

Doug Glasshoff, a teacher with East Butler Public Schools and a Math in the Middle graduate, will be the course instructor for MATH 802T. Doug also taught MATH 802T in 2011. Here are what some teachers had to say about Doug’s instruction and the rewards from taking an NMSSI course:

"Doug did a great job teaching/explaining/guiding the class."

"Having the opportunity to discuss mathematics with colleagues was invaluable."

"I am truly grateful to once again have the opportunity to take part in professional development this past summer. It was a great reinforcement to see the great things that the teachers in the State of Nebraska are doing in their classrooms."
