UNK's Ford teaching professional development course in mathematics
Fellowships worth $300 are available until May 20 to help cover tuition for courses for teachers through the Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institutes (NMSSI) from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln this summer.
MATH 800T: Math as a Second Language (Class # 2954, Sec # 951) will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 3-7 in Kearney for grades 3-7 teachers and will be taught by Dr. Pari Ford of UNK. Pari went to UNK as an undergrad and earned her Ph.D. from the UNL Department of Mathematics. She worked as a graduate assistant for UNL's Math in the Middle grant and now keeps in contact with teachers through coordination of the Math Teachers' Circle for the Kearney area.
We have already awarded more than 150 fellowships to Nebraska teachers and have around 50 more to give out. Join your colleagues today in applying for an NMSSI Fellowship by May 20: https://cse.unl.edu/scimath/apps/apply.php. All current Nebraska mathematics teachers also automatically qualify for a 20 percent reduction in the cost of tuition.
This course will help you align your teaching with the new Nebraska standards and the new Common Core standards in mathematics by focusing on the development of "habits of mind of a mathematical thinker". The approach is to understand arithmetic (number) and (introductory) algebra as a means of communicating mathematical ideas, and will stress a deep understanding of the basic operations of arithmetic, as well as the interconnected nature of arithmetic, algebra and geometry relating to the grades 3-7 curriculum.
To register for this class or other NMSSI courses, if you have not taken a graduate course at UNL in the past year, you need to enroll as a non-degree-seeking graduate student via Teach Nebraska through a very quick, simple application: http:///www.unl.edu/gradstudies/teachneb. Completing this application and the NMSSI Fellowship application are all you have to do to take advantage of this opportunity.
