Professional development opportunities in your area

Fellowships worth $300 are available until May 20 to help cover tuition for courses for teachers through the Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institutes (NMSSI) from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln this summer so act now! Courses in your area are:

• MATH 807T: Using Mathematics to Understand our World in Holdrege at ESU 11 from June 3-7 (Class # 10187, Sec # 951)
• MATH 804T: Experimentation, Conjecture and Reasoning in North Platte at ESU 16 from June 10-14 (Class # 3413, Sec # 951)

We have already awarded more than 150 fellowships to Nebraska teachers and have around 50 more to give out. Join your colleagues today in applying for an NMSSI Fellowship by May 20: https://cse.unl.edu/scimath/apps/apply.php. All current Nebraska mathematics teachers also automatically qualify for a 20 percent reduction in the cost of tuition.

MATH 807T will examine the mathematics underlying several socially-relevant questions from a variety of academic disciplines. Mathematical models of problems will be constructed and studied using a variety of topics and basic skills in algebra, functions, statistics and probability. Sources will include original documentation whenever possible (such as government data, reports and research papers) in order to provide a sense of the very real role that mathematics plays in society. Dan Schaben, a teacher at Arapahoe High School and a Noyce Master Teacher at UNL, will be the lead instructor of the course.

MATH 804T focuses on problem solving, reasoning and proof and communicating mathematics. The overall goal for this course is to bring participants to the next level in the development of their mathematical habits of mind; a person who is an effective mathematical thinker has a toolbox of skills and knowledge to experiment, conjecture, reason, and ultimately solve problems. Katie Morrison, an assistant professor at the University of Northern Colorado who earned her Ph.D. at UNL, will be the lead instructor of the course.

To register for this class or other NMSSI courses, if you have not taken a graduate course at UNL in the past year, you need to enroll as a non-degree-seeking graduate student via Teach Nebraska through a very quick, simple application: http:///www.unl.edu/gradstudies/teachneb. Completing this application and the NMSSI Fellowship application are all you have to do to take advantage of this opportunity.

Visit our website http://scimath.unl.edu/nmssi for more details and email Lindsay Augustyn at laugustyn2@unl.edu with any questions.

The Benefits of the NMSSI:
