Take a new graduate-level science course for K-5 teachers
The Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institutes is pleased to announce an opportunity for K-5 elementary teachers to take a newly created graduate science course.
In just one week, you can earn 3 graduate credits at UNL! TEAC 921A Seminar in Literacy Studies: Integrating Reading and Science Instruction would count toward either a master’s degree or a doctorate in UNL’s Department of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education.
TEAC 921A is one week, from June 8-12, with 40 hours of face-to-face instruction (in class from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and will be held on the UNL City Campus, most likely in Henzlik Hall.
This graduate-level course (Class # 15517, Section 591) is designed to help elementary (K-5) teachers enhance student engagement in the classroom through science and literacy. Teachers will learn about Concept Oriented Reading Instruction (CORI) - a research-based, instructional framework for creating academic engagement by integrating reading principles into science and other content areas. This class also focuses on how curriculum, curriculum integration among content areas, and motivational strategies augment comprehension and enhance student achievement.
If you took a class through the NMSSI last summer (or any graduate course at UNL in the past year), you are eligible to register through MyRed: http://myred.unl.edu. Instructions can be found here: http://www.unl.edu/regrec/registration-procedures. Please note that you can simply enter the Class Number in the Search box in the Shopping Cart and that specific class will appear.
If you have not taken a graduate course at UNL in the past year, you need to enroll at UNL as a non-degree-seeking graduate student via the Teach Nebraska website: http:///www.unl.edu/gradstudies/teachneb. The $50 graduate school application fee is waived for current teachers. On your Teach Nebraska application, you will enter the Course Number, Class Number and Section Number of each course you want to take and be automatically registered for the course by Grad Studies. (All classes are 3 credit hours.)
You are welcome to apply for a fellowship from NMSSI to further reduce the costs of tuition and fees. Current teachers automatically receive a 20% tuition discount, but you can apply online via the CSMCE application portal for additional fellowships: http://go.unl.edu/scimathapply. Start by choosing "Create an Account" to get logged in. Once in, click on the "NMSSI Summer 2015 Fellowship" to get started.
Please email nebraskamath@unl.edu with any questions. We hope you will join us for a summer filled with learning!
