UNL offers new course for elementary science teachers

The Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institutes (NMSSI) offer graduate science, mathematics and pedagogy courses that are in a weeklong format to help you take advantage of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's professional development opportunities conveniently and affordably. A new course, TEAC 924A for grades K-5 teachers, will be offered on the UNL City Campus this summer. Use your LPS tuition bank credits to take a course with us!

As follows are the course dates, times and description for this Lincoln course from July 11-5, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.:

TEAC 924A: Seminar in Curriculum and Teaching of Science: Elementary; Enriching Elementary Science Practices – Class # 12484, Sec # 691, Instructor: Dr. Krista Adams, UNL College of Education

This graduate level course will help elementary (K-5) teachers enrich science lessons through the “literacy lens” of varied genres of children’s books. Teachers will learn about the fundamental science literacy – the ability to read, write, and speak scientifically – through information presented as both text and pictures. Teachers will learn how to engage students in authentic science practices, comprehension of the text and science content, and recognition of scientific uncertainty. The final course product will guide participant teachers through creation and development of a classroom-ready, instructional unit.

The Benefits of the NMSSI:
• Nebraska teachers automatically qualify for a 20 percent discount on in-state tuition at UNL
• Teachers can also apply for an additional $300 tuition fellowship from the NMSSI if tuition credits are not available: http://go.unl.edu/scimathapply
• All NMSSI courses also include a free lunch on each day of class
• The $50 UNL Graduate Studies admission fee is waived for current Nebraska teachers
• Each course is worth 3 graduate credit hours at UNL
