Cognition and motivation course targets math and science teachers
Looking for a course that will help you motivate students in your math and science classrooms? EDPS 991: Cognition and Motivation, for K-12 teachers, will be held in Omaha from June 6-17 (M-F, 1 p.m.- 5 p.m.) and is free (all tuition and fees) to OPS teachers.
Thanks to the NebraskaMATH OPS Teacher Leader Academy that is being funded by the Sherwood and Lozier foundations, OPS teachers have a unique opportunity to pursue graduate education at no cost to them. Lunch also will be provided for the participants.
EDPS 991, taught by Dr. Mary Zeleny of the UNL Department of Educational Psychology, is designed to provide mathematics and science teachers with a framework for thinking about how human cognition, motivation and self-regulation influence students and instructional practices. More specifically, this course emphasizes core concepts in educational psychology, such as information processing, problem solving, motivation and self-regulated learning, and their influences on the design, implementation and evaluation of high quality instruction.
This course encourages teachers to create an environment that allows students some degree of flexibility to work on ideas they deem most relevant to themselves, and yet provides the structure necessary to truly explore how various theories actually play out in the classroom.
Apply now for an “OPS Sherwood-Lozier Fellowship for Summer 2016” here: http://go.unl.edu/scimathapply. You may take up to three courses (9 credits) covered by the Sherwood-Lozier funds in Summer 2016.
To enroll in EDPS 991, a permission code is needed in MyRED. Email laugustyn2@unl.edu for a code.
Secondary teachers also can pair this course with Math 810T: Algebra for Algebra Teachers in the mornings, June 6-17 (M-F, 8 a.m.-noon).
