Math graduate course for middle-level teachers coming to Holdrege
The Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institutes (NMSSI) program offers convenient and affordable graduate mathematics and pedagogy courses that are in a weeklong format to help you take advantage of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's professional development opportunities. Math 808T: Concepts of Calculus for Middle-Level Teachers (grades 6-10 teachers) will be offered in Holdrege this summer at ESU 11 from June 19-23.
Math 808T: Concepts of Calculus – Class # 3315, Sec # 951, June 19-23, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., ESU 11:
Develops a fundamental understanding of the key mathematical ideas of calculus in order to broaden teachers' mathematical perspective and gain insight into concepts contained in the middle-level curriculum which are related and foundational to the development of calculus. Topics include limits, differentiation, integration, applications and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.
For all on-site NMSSI courses, current Nebraska teachers automatically qualify for a tuition reduction equal to 20 percent of in-state, graduate tuition. Additionally, Nebraska K-12 teachers can apply for supplemental NMSSI Fellowships to further defray tuition costs for NMSSI courses. Read more about the costs at: http://scimath.unl.edu/nmssi/2017/costs/. The NMSSI Fellowship Application is also now open at http://go.unl.edu/scimathapply.
We are also offering a math course for teachers in North Platte, through the TEAMS grant. Math 896: Special Topics: Functional Reasoning in STEM for Secondary Mathematics Teachers will focus on content knowledge for secondary mathematics teachers, connecting functions across the secondary mathematics curriculum to each other and to science content. Functions arise when modeling physical phenomena, providing connections across the curriculum and to the world outside school. Through the content of functions, teachers in this course will solve mathematical problems, model and represent mathematical problems, communicate mathematical ideas effectively, and make mathematical connections. If you would like to sign up for TEAMS from June 5-16, please contact us at nebraskamath@unl.edu . Teachers are paid a stipend of $15 per hour of class attended, for a total of (up to) $1,200.
