NMSSI offers graduate math courses for primary teachers
Are you looking for professional development that helps you with the NeSA-M and state mathematics standards? Have you been wanting to take courses that are designed specifically for elementary teachers, instead of the standard K-12?
The Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institutes (NMSSI) offers convenient and affordable graduate courses in mathematics in a weeklong format to help you take advantage of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's professional development opportunities. We want to bring your attention to a math course in Omaha for primary grades teachers and a new pedagogy course that will be held in Ashland.
MATH 803P: Algebraic Thinking for the Elementary Classroom will be held July 24-28, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Omaha (Class # 3336). This course will explore Algebraic Thinking in K-4 Mathematics. Participants will examine case studies, video segments and student work samples. Discussion will revolve around student understanding of Algebraic properties of mathematics. Participants will explore instructional strategies for fostering Algebraic thinking and eliciting high-level mathematical discourse in both the primary (K-2) and intermediate (3-5) elementary classrooms. The instructor is OPS teacher Jill Luschen.
In Ashland, TEAC 892: Manipulatives in Mathematics Education (Class # 4007) will be held June 19-23, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Ashland-Greenwood Jr/Sr High in the Media Center. This course is devoted to the role of manipulative materials (both concrete and virtual) in promoting mathematics learning. A philosophy of using manipulatives is developed and integrated with a range of experiences proven effective in helping students learn mathematics. The topics and materials will range from primary to middle grades to secondary mathematics but are focused on K-8. The instructor is Dr. Amanda Thomas at UNL.
