Check out these graduate course options for K-8 teachers
Are you looking for professional development that helps you with the NeSA-M and state mathematics standards? Have you been wanting to take courses that are designed specifically for elementary teachers, instead of the standard K-12? Use your LPS tuition bank credits to take a course with us this summer!
The Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institutes (NMSSI) offer graduate mathematics and pedagogy courses that are in a weeklong format to help you take advantage of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's professional development opportunities. TEAC 880E for grades K-8 teachers will be offered on the UNL City Campus and Math 896 for K-6 teachers will be offered in Crete this summer.
TEAC 880E: Teaching with Technology: Instructional Technology in K-8 Mathematics Classrooms (Class # 14336, Sec # 391) is May 30-June 3 (Tuesday-Saturday), 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., in 107 Henzlik Hall with instructor Dr. Amanda Thomas of TLTE at UNL.
TEAC 880E will focus on goal-driven technology use for the teaching and learning of mathematics in elementary and middle grades. A survey of relevant research and theories relating to mathematics technology will provide a foundation for exploring, analyzing, evaluating, and planning mathematics instruction that leverages the affordances of technology in the K-8 classroom. Participants will investigate and demonstrate applications, design assessment and instruction, and enhance curriculum materials to integrate technology across a variety of mathematics topics in elementary and middle grades. This course will offer differentiated reading and assignment options that target both research and classroom practice.
This summer, the NDE and UNL have partnered to offer a professional development workshop on elementary-integrated STEM for grades 6-8 teachers through Nebraska Partnership TEAMS. The nearest regional workshop to you is in Crete. MATH 896: Special Topics: Elementary-Integrated STEM will be held June 5-9 and 12-16, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Crete Middle School. Teachers will learn to leverage science explorations to provide context and meaning to mathematics instruction in the elementary classroom, while also supporting children’s learning of science. Participants will engage in integrated science/math experiences, deepen their knowledge of concepts needed to integrate math and science in their own classrooms, and learn how to develop rich, integrated lessons to engage children in meaningful and memorable learning experiences.
TEAMS participants are paid a stipend of $15 per hour of class (for up to $1,200). You can choose to use your LPS tuition bank points to take Math 896 for credit and keep your $1,200 stipend! Teachers who live more than 35 miles one-way from their TEAMS site will receive mileage reimbursement for commuting to class. Read more and APPLY BY MAY 1 at: http://scimath.unl.edu/csmce/teams
