Explore what makes calculus different from algebra in Math 808T

What makes calculus different from algebra? Why are derivatives and integrals important? Understand why topics in algebra are so useful in Math 808T: Concepts of Calculus, held in Holdrege this summer from June 19-23.

The Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institutes (NMSSI) program offers graduate mathematics and pedagogy courses in a weeklong format to help you take advantage of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's professional development opportunities conveniently and afforably. Math 808T: Concepts of Calculus (Class # 3315) will be offered at ESU 11 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 19-23.

In this course, teachers will connect ideas in algebra to the basic concepts which define calculus. Rather than calculating derivatives and integrals, we will focus on what they mean and how they are developed from basic algebra concepts. We do this with pictures (graphs), tables and symbolic representations of functions. Although it's not intended for teachers of calculus, those who do will likely find the conceptual approach very information and useful for sharing with their students. Only algebra is a prerequisite, no trigonometry needed.

For all on-site NMSSI courses, current Nebraska teachers automatically qualify for a tuition reduction equal to 20 percent of in-state, graduate tuition. Additionally, Nebraska K-12 teachers can apply for supplemental NMSSI Fellowships to further defray tuition costs for NMSSI courses. Read more about the costs at: http://scimath.unl.edu/nmssi/2017/costs/. The NMSSI Fellowship Application is also now open at http://go.unl.edu/scimathapply.
