Try your skills at Robotics in tuition-free UNL graduate course

Want to try your skills at robotics? Take the UNL course CSCE 890: Introduction to Robotics for Teachers from June 5-9 and 12-16 in Omaha for free! Thanks to the NebraskaMATH OPS Teacher Leader Academy, funded by the Sherwood and Lozier foundations, OPS math and science teachers have a unique opportunity to pursue graduate education at no cost to them!

This Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institutes (NMSSI) course is for middle-level and secondary teachers wishing to gain knowledge and experience in the foundations of the science of Robotics and in the programming and field testing of robots using the included software. Each day introduces a particular strategy and teaching objective taught through class presentations, robot programming demonstrations, and challenges in Robotics programming completed both in class and as homework. Enrollment is limited to 15.

While we know that a new subject like this can be hard to tackle, middle school and secondary students are being attracted to this subject in droves. With this NMSSI course, you will learn how to make robots move by the end of the second afternoon! CSCE 890: Introduction to Robotics for Teachers (Section 951, Class # 3249) is from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on June 5-9 and June 12-16 for teachers of grades 6-12 (location TBD, but will be an OPS building).

For more information about lead instructor Jesse Andres of Lincoln Public Schools, see: http://www.lps.org/post/detail.cfm?id=8053 Don Costello, Associate Professor Emeritus of Computer Science and Engineering at UNL, is co-instructor. Contact Don with questions at 402-472-5005 or dcostello2@unl.edu. This course is worth 3 graduate credit hours from the UNL Department of Computer Science and Engineering. It also counts as an elective for the MAT degree (Master of Arts for Teachers from the Department of Mathematics).

Sherwood-Lozier Fellowships make it possible for OPS teachers to take these courses at no cost for tuition or fees. Lunch will be provided for participants. All NMSSI courses listed in our online course catalog are eligible for Sherwood-Lozier Fellowships: http://scimath.unl.edu/nmssi/2017
