Help your students build problem solving skills, algebraic thinking
This summer, OPS teachers have a unique opportunity to take graduate mathematics courses through the University of Nebraska-Lincoln at no cost to them! All tuition and fees for eligible courses are funded by the Sherwood and Lozier foundations, through the NebraskaMATH OPS Teacher Leader Academy.
Two courses held in Omaha specifically for teachers of your grade level are Math 803P: Algebraic Thinking for the Elementary Classroom and Math 804P: Problem Solving & Critical Thinking for Elementary Teachers. Each course is worth 3 graduate credit hours at UNL.
From June 26-30, Math 804P Problem Solving (Class # 3230) will be taught by OPS teacher Connie Colton. From July 24-28, Math 803P Algebraic Thinking (Class # 3336) will be taught by OPS teacher Jill Luschen. Both courses will be at the TAC building from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for 40 hours of face-to-face instruction. Lunch will be provided each day.
Math 804P seeks to build a strong foundation for the teaching and communication of mathematical concepts by the hands-on development of critical-thinking skills via problem-solving experiences. It provides a guided opportunity for the implementation of problem-solving instruction that is aligned with the Nebraska mathematics standards in both the primary (K-2) and intermediate (3-5) elementary classroom.
Math 803P will explore Algebraic Thinking in K-4 Mathematics. Participants will examine case studies, video segments and student work samples. Discussion will revolve around student understanding of Algebraic properties of mathematics. Participants will explore instructional strategies for fostering Algebraic thinking and eliciting high-level mathematical discourse in both the primary (K-2) and intermediate (3-5) elementary classrooms.
Sherwood-Lozier Fellowships make it possible for OPS teachers to take these courses at no cost for tuition or fees. All NMSSI courses listed in our online course catalog are eligible for Sherwood-Lozier Fellowships: http://scimath.unl.edu/nmssi/2017
Apply now for an “OPS Sherwood-Lozier Fellowship for Summer 2017” here: http://go.unl.edu/scimathapply . You may take up to three courses (9 credits) covered by the Sherwood-Lozier funds in Summer 2017. Please apply for the fellowship by June 1.
