Help your students build problem solving skills, algebraic thinking

Earn 3 graduate credit hours in one week in Omaha through the Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institutes program offered by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The NMSSI offers graduate courses in mathematics for teachers in a weeklong format. For all in-person courses (not online), current Nebraska teachers automatically qualify for a tuition reduction equal to 20 percent of in-state, graduate tuition. With additional NMSSI Fellowships, a course outside of Lincoln can cost a teacher less than $500. The NMSSI Fellowship Application is also now open at http://go.unl.edu/scimathapply

Two courses held in Omaha specifically for teachers of your grade level are Math 803P: Algebraic Thinking for the Elementary Classroom and Math 804P: Problem Solving & Critical Thinking for Elementary Teachers.

Math 804P: Problem Solving (Class # 3230) will be held June 26-30, and Math 803P: Algebraic Thinking (Class # 3336) will be held July 24-28. Both will be at the OPS TAC building, 3215 Cuming St., from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., for 40 hours of face-to-face instruction. Lunch will be provided each day.

Math 804P seeks to build a strong foundation for the teaching and communication of mathematical concepts by the hands-on development of critical-thinking skills via problem-solving experiences. It provides a guided opportunity for the implementation of problem-solving instruction that is aligned with the Nebraska mathematics standards in both the primary (K-2) and intermediate (3-5) elementary classroom.

Math 803P will explore Algebraic Thinking in K-4 Mathematics. Participants will examine case studies, video segments and student work samples. Discussion will revolve around student understanding of Algebraic properties of mathematics. Participants will explore instructional strategies for fostering Algebraic thinking and eliciting high-level mathematical discourse in both the primary (K-2) and intermediate (3-5) elementary classrooms.
