Develop strategies for enhancing your math curriculum
Fellowships worth $500 are available for TEAC 892: Teacher Learning about Reasoning & Sense Making in Secondary Mathematics for a limited time and in a limited quantity, through the Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institutes (NMSSI). The NMSSI Fellowship Application is now open, and completed applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis.
TEAC 892: Teacher Learning about Reasoning & Sense Making in Secondary Mathematics will be offered from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. June 4-8 and 11-15 in 110 Avery Hall on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s City Campus. This course (Class # 9587, Section # 592) will focus on three main issues: exploring the nature of reasoning-and-proving in secondary mathematics; establishing criteria for judging the validity of mathematical arguments; and developing strategies for modifying current textbook tasks to provide more reasoning opportunities for students. Course materials include math tasks, cases drawn from real secondary mathematics classrooms, related student work, and prompts for mathematical and pedagogical discussions and reflections. This is an excellent course to help secondary teachers make immediate improvements to their mathematics classrooms in order to better prepare students for the ACT.
For all in-person NMSSI courses, current Nebraska teachers automatically qualify for a tuition reduction equal to 20 percent of in-state, graduate tuition. Additionally, Nebraska K-12 teachers can apply for supplemental NMSSI Fellowships to further defray tuition costs for NMSSI courses. (Note: The fellowship amount awarded can depend upon other courses you are taking.)
To enroll in UNL graduate courses, follow the steps outlined on the website. This summer we are offering 25 courses across the state and online to meet your professional development needs.
The Benefits of the NMSSI:
• Nebraska teachers automatically qualify for a 20 percent discount on in-state tuition at UNL
• Teachers can also apply for an additional tuition fellowship from the NMSSI: http://go.unl.edu/scimathapply
• Each course is worth 3 graduate credit hours at UNL
