Fellowships available for two summer courses

This summer, OPS teachers have a unique opportunity to take graduate mathematics courses through the University of Nebraska-Lincoln at no cost to them! All tuition and fees for eligible courses are funded by the Sherwood Foundation.

A limited number of fellowships are available for two courses for secondary math teachers this summer: Math 804T: Experimentations, Conjecture & Reasoning in Gretna and TEAC 808E: Improvement of Instruction in School Mathematics – Secondary: Special Topics – Classroom Discourse in Lincoln. These courses are worth 3 graduate credit hours at UNL and count toward two different master’s degree programs.

From July 16-20, Math 804T (Class # 9499) will be taught at the Gretna District Office by Dr. Eric Canton from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. From July 23-27, TEAC 808E (Class # 4727) will be taught on the UNL City Campus by Dr. Lorraine Males, also from 8-5.

Math 804T (for grades 6-10 teachers) focuses on problem solving, reasoning and proof and communicating mathematics. The overall goal for this course is to bring participants to the next level in the development of their mathematical habits of mind: A person who is an effective mathematical thinker has a toolbox of skills and knowledge to experiment, conjecture, reason, and ultimately solve problems. *Note: If you are thinking about a master’s degree from the math department at UNL (the MAT) you should take this course to assess your readiness.

TEAC 808E (for grades 7-12 teachers) will engage secondary mathematics teachers in understanding classroom discourse and its relationship to student learning. Readings, discussions and activities will provide opportunities for teachers to develop an awareness for how classroom discourse influences the opportunities we provide to students and to provide support for teachers in analyzing their own discourse patterns and their impact on student learning. One of the major components of the work will involve examining your own classroom discourse practices.

Sherwood Fellowships make it possible for OPS teachers to take these courses at no cost for tuition or fees. Apply now for an “OPS Sherwood-Lozier Fellowship for Summer 2018” here: http://go.unl.edu/scimathapply . Please apply for the fellowship by July 9 for Math 804T and by July 13 for TEAC 808E, to allow time for registering.
